Interchangeable Parts

A Grade 9 Reading Skill Resource

In the eighteenth century, most tools were still made by hand. If you wanted to buy a hunting rifle, a small shop made it for you. When a piece of the gun broke, you would have to take it back to that shop and have a craftsman create a new part for it. This practice made common tools both expensive to buy and difficult to maintain.

This is a reading about Eli Whitney and the process of manufacturing that he improved.
